                If Las Vegas is a city saturated with sin, then the AVNs is the site of our salvation. This adult oriented occasion brought a surfeit of stars, scumbags, and silicone into the Nevada desert for a weekend drenched in debauchery. What do you get when you mix a bunch of drunk and horny guys with half naked porn stars? The sexual harassment maelstrom that is the 2012 AVNs.

If you’ve never been to Vegas (as many of the girls working the event surprisingly had not), then this would be a perversely ideal week to go. The AVNs grab the attention of every hot female the world over, and those who can’t make it in the flesh have their eyes fixed on attendee’s live tweets (*cough*UVulgarSFiend*cough*) for to-the-minute updates.

Popping the already worn and torn cherry of the Hard Rock Casino, the dudes at Adult Video Network decided to pull the plug on hosting this years show at the Palms, opting for an “edgier” venue. Thusly, the expo was divided up into several different areas throughout the casino. In Hard Rock’s The Joint, the main concert hall where the awards were held on Saturday, booths had been set up for fans of both production companies, like Digital Playground and Burning Angel, and individual starlets, such as Jayla Diamond and Julie Cash.

If wadding through throngs of insipid pornaholics isn’t your bag, then you might enjoy the AEE hall. Comprised of any company willing to buy a booth (lookin’ desperate, AVN), the Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE) portion of this event is a haphazard mixture from the eclectic (Hong Kong Gentlemen’s Club, Red Dawn, Glass Wares) to the esoteric (Samy’s Camera, Identity Protection, Sin City Chamber of Commerce). From signed photos of your favorite fuck stars (Favorite quote, “It’s weird having everyone come up to you and go into detail about how much they have masturbated to you.”) to amateur pole dancing and webcam contests (“A decent method for girls to insert their way into the industry.” Claimed a drunkard to his girlfriend.), without a doubt, there is much to see and do during this four day exposition.

Little known to a majority of AVN patrons is the existence of an underground prostitution ring manifesting itself at the expo. Before I continue on this touchy tangent, let us remind you that paying for sex is legal and highly regulated in certain parts of Nevada. Pairing a gathering of sex industry workers with sex starved fans seems like a recipe for disaster; luckily, pros wander the expo floor in search of new clients. Since prostitution is illegal within the confides of the county where Hard Rock lies, solicitation is discerning and done on the down low. It takes a learned eye to recognize what is going on – the eye of a pro, a John, or a cop.

Armed with this insider info and the type of nagging curiosity that doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone, I set out to find the true story behind AEE and the AVNs – clandestine prostitution ring or industry social gathering? I met a local “hobbyist”, as Johns on the inside refer to one another, whom incidentally referred to himself as Johnny. Johnny schooled me on what had been going on for years. He did not wish to do a video interview for obvious reasons.

“Of course the Adult Entertainment Expo is full of prostitutes!” He testified over a whiskey and cigarette at the Hard Rock Casino bar. “Everyone here is looking to get laid, and the girls know it. What you have to understand is that prostitution has always been a big thing in Las Vegas. Hell, there have been brothels even before it [prostitution] was legal in Nye county and other parts.” Johnny sipped his whiskey and looked over his shoulder before continuing. “The rumor is that the Palms finally got fed up with all of the hooking.” He went on to tell me about the existence of escort and pro review sites, like www.theeroticreview.com and www.humaniplex.com, where hobbyists can identify and rank their favorite working girls. “It’s the easiest way to tell if you’re talking to a cop before you rendezvous.” Johnny said. He references an annual meet and greet gathering of hobbyists that occurs following the AVN awards and promised to take me there after the award show.

Thrust back into the expo hall, I made way to the novelty room and trade room. The latter included international distributors looking to make a buck in the wholesale dildo business. The former is a more individual oriented version of the trade room. With three out of three cameras our team had brought along with us no longer working, the UVSF staff set out to discover a real AVN experience. As I looked at the worn shelves covered in dust, I can’t help but wonder whether this is a dilapidated bar, brothel, or private residence.

Johnny knew the owner.

“Mike.” He said in excitement before he turned to me. “This guy is a living legend.”

I shook the hand of a gray haired gentleman. One look at that wrinkled face and it was immediately apparent how much experience this man possessed. How many blowjobs had he received in the last 80 years? His wife, who sat at the adjacent bench, surely did not know the answer.

As Johnny chatted with Mike, I took it upon myself to take a visual tour of the place. Undoubtedly, people were copulating just out of sight in the other room, but how much did they pay to get down? Further confrontation outside of the building resulted in firearms being brandished, at which point we quickly left the premises.

The AVNs may be over, but I am still left with numerous unanswered questions. Not unlike the adult industry itself, here is an award show surrounded in not only moral ambiguity, but a web of legal intricacies where the end result is money changing hands for the simple fulfillment of vice – and that is about as American as it gets.
