Porn – the four letter word symbolizes a cornucopia of different associations for different people. Be it the stigma of cashing in on God’s anatomical gift or the exhilaration of voyeurism and the forbidden fruit, there is no doubting the explicit virtue of pornography. While many are arguing whether porn is an attribute or detriment to society, the rest of us are jerking off.
“Porn is proof that anyone can get laid” The director quips after the film.
According to Yahoo News, 68% of Americans watch or have looked at porn (and about 30% are liars). While the average pervert may enjoy porn, not a single fuck is given about what the porn star’s do when the cameras are off (stalkers withstanding). Believing in the on-camera persona is surely part of the allure of pornography, but when the clothes come on what are these fuck stars really like? How are their daily lives affected by their career choice? And what on Earth do retired porn stars do? These are just some of the penetrating questions explored in After Porn Ends, an all oral documentary of porn stars who have given up their lust in favor of life.
“Porn stars are people, too.” Shelly Lubben testifies in regards to the message behind the movie.
The film begins with a cold intro of a group of ex-porn stars, including the now infamous Nina Hartley, Amber Lynn, Mary Carey, Raylene, Crissy Moran, Asia Carrera, Randy West, Seka, Bill Margold, Tyffany Million, Shelly Lubben, Richard Pacheco, and John Leslie. They have become artists, Christian activists, real estate agents, nursing students, hobbyists, professional golfers, not surprisingly single moms, and… a bounty hunter? You better believe it.
“It’s fiction. Pure entertainment; like live action cartoons.” An ex-porn star says. “Porn is a silly medium for a very serious subject.”
As their tales unfold throughout the film, we see a filthy sentiment starting to take shape. Although the film makers assure us that the overwhelmingly negative tone of the movie in regards to the adult entertainment industry is coincidental, all of the ex-porn stars reflect on the profound detriment making adult movies has had in their lives. It left them with addictions, emotional scars, destroyed relationships and families – and made they an ass load of money. But can all of that be changed in a life after porn? Does such a reality exist?
“Porn gives young, beautiful people what they crave: credibility, validation, and immortality.” One of the cast members says when discussing his inception into adult films.
Everyone sings a different song when asked why they first got into porn. The adult industry openly welcomes young, sexy, and morally flexible men and women who are looking to make as much money as possible for the least amount of work. And who doesn’t love a good fuck? The idea is sound, however, a typical career in fuck flicks lasts up to 3 years, unless one becomes a “mega-porn star” exception. Hundreds of thousands of dollars later, the porn production companies give these ex-stars the boot and they are left jobless and with no employable skills or knowledge. Some turn tricks to get by; others look for another door back in industry.
“X is forever.” Says one of the former adult performers. “And it’s a masturbatory catharsis for the masses.” He adds later.
It was only recently that a San Diego teacher was fired solely because the school administration discovered she used to do porn, citing her past life as a “distraction” for students. Her case is typical of life after porn – a life of social exile and isolation, where the people who once enjoyed their work now ostracize them.
“This movie should be required viewing for people contemplating a career in the adult movie industry.” Says Ron Jeremy of the film afterwards.
Whether you find yourself somehow involved in the sex industry, infatuated with it, or just occasionally enjoy good porn, After Porn End is without a doubt one interesting documentary you will want to take from inside.
